Position Overview 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a nonprofit organization working at the nexus of organizing, advocacy, and wellness. FAJ has grown rapidly in recent years and we are creating a new Communications and Individual Donor Coordinator position to lead and implement our communications strategy as reflected in our horizon statement – As a visible anchor for thriving Filipino communities, FAJ centers transformative change (individual and collective) by championing working class and cross racial solidarity, intergenerational wellness and healing, and freedom and self-determination for all of our BIPOC communities.

 

The Donor & Communications Coordinator will be responsible for liaising with individual donors to steward and grow relationships, as well as creating social media content and communications pieces that reflect the work of the organization. Maintenance of the donor database (Network for Good), coordination of donor events, some grant and donor research and writing, and some project management and reporting. The Coordinator is also responsible for timely gift processing, acknowledgment, and benefits fulfillment. This is a great role for someone who wants to build their nonprofit fundraising skill and be positioned to grow in their role.

 

This position requires initiative, creativity, strong communications skills, and a passion for promoting human rights, peace, and psychosocial wellbeing. The ideal candidate enjoys building relationships and sees this work as connected to the wellbeing and sustainability of the organization as a whole. The Coordinator understands and supports FAJ’s mission and core values and is responsible for outreach, events, and cultivation strategies to increase organizational impact around visibility, business relationships, and fundraising.

 

Essential Responsibilities 

Communications (50%)

  • Develop communications strategy; create social media content, newsletters, and other communications materials in alignment with strategy
  • Conduct interviews with staff as necessary to update and create new content related to organization-wide and campaign-specific activities
  • Lead the “communications committee” and help staff tell inspiring stories and produce content that conveys our impact, via print and digital communications
  • Develop compelling written and visual content to engage audiences via online, email, print materials, social media and earned media.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations and represent FAJ in steering committees and coalitions for campaign communications strategies
  • Assist in updating content on the FAJ website (WordPress)
  • Executes one to two (1-2) fundraising appeals annually
  • Participate in bi-weekly, quarterly, and annual communications team meetings to identify annual and event-specific communications strategies and tactics, particularly for increasing fundraising and donor engagement
  • Lead the email marketing (Mailchimp), quarterly newsletters, fundraising campaigns, and other related emails
  • Support special projects as needed – projects may include interviewing leaders for articles, calling media outlets, attending events to support social media posting

 

Individual Donor Management (40%) 

  • Steward FAJ’s individual donors through the organization’s donor management platform (Network for Good) by recording and tracking gifts, sending thank-you letters, importing new contacts from online fundraising events, running reports to provide data on donor engagement, and to reconcile donations with Office Manager
  • Develop and edit strategic communications materials for individual donors
  • Support Leadership Committee with grant writing and proposal development
  • Support with planning and coordination of events throughout the year, including managing vendors and site logistics, organizing volunteers, and managing invitations/RSVPs
  • Prepare gift acknowledgments, pledge letters, updates, and write/send thank you and acknowledgment emails/letters to key supporters after gifts received

 

Organization-wide responsibilities (10%) 

  • Participate in FAJ grassroots fundraising campaigns and events; in occasional organization-wide campaign events; in cross-department committees and teams
  • Support some finance processes and projects as needed, such as the annual budgeting process or providing information to finance staff for payroll reconciliation
  • Other duties as needed

 

Required Experience and Skills 

  • Mission alignment: Committed to the vision of a powerful, inclusive, multiracial, working-class movement-building as a path towards liberation for all people.
  • Basic understanding of conditions of the Filipino and immigrant community in the Bay Area; familiarity with and empathy to challenges faced by immigrant/migrant communities
  • At least 2 years in individual donor management OR in developing communications strategy and producing polished, publicly facing communications materials, including social media content.
  • Exemplary writing and editing skills, with experience simplifying complex information for different audiences. Must enjoy writing!
  • Ability to digest new information quickly and think critically about what information is needed to craft compelling cases for support; ability to continuously listen for relevant program information and integrate it into FAJ’s fundraising strategies and grant proposals/reports
  • Ability to think creatively about how to find new sources of support by marketing campaigns in new ways to a variety of funders.
  • Maturity and an ability to work collaboratively, facilitating communications goals and strategy with staff members.
  • Comfort with MS Office Suite
  • Experience with email marketing software (MailChimp, Constant Contact or similar)
  • Adept with social media, particularly Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bilingual English/Tagalog speaker
  • Experience in working independently under pressure
  • Comfortable in a fast paced (sometimes intense) work environment; fast learner, self-starter, able to ask for help
  • Experience in outreach and relationship building
  • Familiarity with grant writing or proposal development or strong interest in learning
  • Familiarity with CRM or databases such as Network for Good and Powerbase including data entry, report generation, list management, and segmentation, plus willingness and interest to build skills and capacity in this area
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a timely manner and handle multiple deadlines
  • A high degree of professionalism and commitment to cultural competency
  • Availability to work some nights/weekends

Location: Currently remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our office will remain closed for staff upon request until it is safe to resume regular operations, at which point the Individual Donor and Communications Coordinator will need to be present in Oakland or Union City offices. FAJ continually assesses COVID risk, market convention related to work locale policies.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $48,000 to $50,000 annually, depending on experience. FAJ provides a generous benefits package, including fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for full-time employees as well as partial coverage for their dependents. We also offer substantial vacation days and time off.
